• The Pennsylvania legislature adopted Act 71 authorizing casinos in the dark of the night, without public input.

• The people of Philadelphia have yet to be asked if we want casinos, and if so, where.
• The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in its licensing decisions…
  • ignores the City of Philadelphia’s Gaming Task Force recommendations
    and the 98% of written public comments that rejected casinos

  • endangers the growing revitalization of the city
  • imperils the livability of long-established neighborhoods
  • preempts public discourse on comprehensive riverfront development
  • usurps the established role of local government
• The social ills that accompany gambling facilities are well established, ranging from issues of traffic congestion to increases in gun violence, crime, addiction, personal bankruptcy, domestic violence, and child abuse.

We therefore endorse the goal of Casino-Free Philadelphia’s referendum to keep casinos 1,500 feet from schools, homes, places of worship, parks, and playgrounds.
