Asian American United Statement on Mayor's Signature

Asian American United's powerful statement about the City Council and the Mayor’s actions. Please read it here below.

Asian Americans United is disappointed but not surprised by the Mayor's decision. It has been clear from the start that there has been no intent to engage in an inclusive process that respects the voices of residents and communities. Worse still has been witnessing the dismantling of processes that have been established in our city precisely to protect residents from capricious and self-serving development.

Update from November 1st

We appreciate all of you who turned out for the Saturday, November 1st march on City Council. You made hundreds of phone calls, distributed flyers, spoke with your neighbors, and together with neighborhood associations and community groups from all over the city we packed the City Council chambers after a march of nearly 1,000 people.

Campaign Launch Meeting

11/18/2008 - 6:00pm
11/18/2008 - 9:00pm

If you are interested in learning more about this effort so you can decide whether to participate, please join us for our kick-off presentation on Tuesday, November 18th, 6:00 PM at the magnificent offices of Liberty Resources, 714 Market Street (Liberty Resources is a wonderful organization advocating for the rights of disabled people). If you would like to consider a leadership role to possibly head up one of the teams, please call Jethro Heiko at 267-984-3493.

Where will you be at 9 am this Saturday?

March from Chinatown Gate (10th and Arch) to City Hall for a public hearing about the proposed Foxwoods site at Market East. The hearing is on the 4th floor of City Hall and begins at 10 am. See you there!

Call to Action: November 1st

This is a call to action for Saturday, November 1, 2008, which is when City Council is having a special Saturday hearing on the slots parlor proposed for Market Street.

City Council is trying to zone Market Street for a casino district. They are trying to rush this through even before Foxwoods discloses its plans. There have been no designs, no impact studies, no nothing. Yet, Council still wants to rezone this area - and fast.

Public Casino District Hearing

11/01/2008 - 9:00am
11/01/2008 - 4:00pm

On Saturday, November 1st -

At 9:00 am sharp we'll meet under the Chinatown Gate at 10th and Arch Streets.
At 9:15 am sharp we'll start marching to City Hall.
At 10:00 am the hearing starts at City Hall, Room 400 (4th Floor)

If you can't make it to the Chinatown Gate in time for the march, then just meet us at City Hall by 10am. If you can't make it by 10am, then get there whenever you can. Stay as long as you can. We understand this is a Saturday but it's also very important.

Sign on to the letter to Mayor Nutter and Councilman DiCicco!

Tuesday morning we sent a letter (read the full letter here) to Mayor Nutter and Councilman DiCicco explaining the dangers of such a rapid pace and asking the Councilman not to introduce the CED at this time. In the letter we call on them to immediately create a public, fair and transparent re-siting process for both Foxwoods and SugarHouse. Please review the letter and send an email to Mayor Nutter and Councilman DiCicco asking them to show integrity, be fair, and slow this process down. If you can, please do this now.

Click here to sign on to Tuesday's letter by sending and email to Mayor Nutter and Councilman DiCicco.
