Campaign Updates

Steve Wynn's stocks declined as soon as we got involved

This Wednesday, advocates for a better Philadelphia will meet for one purpose: to develop plans to bankrupt SugarHouse Casino.

Will you join us?

Planning for SugarHouse

6PM, this Wednesday, Aug. 25

No Slots Spot, 718 Market Street

RSVP for this event now.

Earlier this year, we confronted potential Foxwoods investor Steve Wynn in Harrisburg, voicing our strong opposition to his predatory casino in South Philly. Just minutes after we showed up, the Wynn company stock began to decline.

You probably remember what happened next: Wynn reconsidered the wisdom of his investment, and bailed.

On that day in March, we threatened Steve Wynn with bankruptcy. And we'll be doing the very same thing to SugarHouse and its investors on opening day — and every day after.

SugarHouse direct action

From the beginning, our mission has been "to stop casinos from coming to Philadelphia and close any that open." And since last year, our In the Red campaign has been led by Philadelphians calling for "bankrupting casinos before they bankrupt us."

Next month, our community will confront the first test of this pledge.

On Sept. 22, 2010, SugarHouse casino will open on the riverfront in Fishtown. And on that Wednesday morning, we will announce our plans to send them into bankruptcy.

We know this is a difficult moment for you, as it is for us. But out of crisis comes opportunity, and we can use this moment to demonstrate to spineless politicians and soulless developers that a better Philadelphia is possible. Indeed, many of you have already contributed to our community mural depicting such alternatives (if you haven't, add your name now).

On Wednesday evening, Aug. 25, we will meet in Center City to plan and strategize around SugarHouse's opening and the next steps forward. Please RSVP for this meeting now.

Help us paint a mural for the riverfront

We have a vision that puts people over profits, and that promotes community and creativity. A vision that is developed by us.

We are creating our own waterfront development. We may not have building permits and steel, but we have paint and canvas.

A mural for a sustainable city

We are creating a portable mural that we will display in juxtaposition to the monstrosity that will be SugarHouse Casino. And you can be a part of it.

Support Philly's community mural by adding your name.

We can do it!

Because of the hard work you have done to expose the predatory tactics of the gambling industry, the Foxwoods casino project has been falling apart for months. When Vegas gambling tycoon Steve Wynn wanted to take over the project, our vocal opposition to his indifference for our community pushed him out of town.

Now it's time to do it again.

Harrah's Entertainment, the largest gambling company in the country, wants to take over Foxwoods -- and we must stop them. We can only do it with your support.

Please make a contribution to Casino-Free Philadelphia to ensure a Harrah's-Free Philadelphia.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court is out of control

Help bring order to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which has been working overtime in support of predatory gambling.

As explained below, we're asking that you take a moment and ask a few key lawmakers to begin impeachment hearings for Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille and to mount a full investigation of his cohorts on the court.
